Beskrivning
This historical map titled Tabula Italiæ Antiquæ Geographica presents an accurate reconstruction of the geography of ancient Italy based on the authoritative work of Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville. Originally compiled by d’Anville in the 18th century, this version was drawn and engraved in London for J. Harrison and published on December 19, 1789. The map displays the Italian peninsula with ancient place names, provinces, and Roman roads. Insets provide detailed maps of northeastern Italy and Illyria, as well as a plan of ancient Rome (Urbs Septicollis).
D’Anville was one of the most respected cartographers of the Enlightenment era, known for combining classical sources with empirical geographic data. His maps set a new standard of accuracy and became indispensable to historians, geographers, and archaeologists. This English edition underscores the transnational influence of d’Anville’s cartographic legacy.
