Beskrivning
This finely engraved map titled The Coasts of Greece and the Archipelago was drawn from the celebrated atlas of Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville and published in London by J. Harrison on April 1, 1788. The map details the coastlines of mainland Greece, the Peloponnese, the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands, western Anatolia, the Sea of Marmara, and the entrance to the Black Sea. It reflects the classical and Enlightenment interest in ancient geography and maritime navigation in the eastern Mediterranean. The map was executed under the patronage of the Duke of Orléans, emphasizing its intellectual and aristocratic pedigree.
D’Anville was one of the most respected cartographers of the Enlightenment era, known for combining classical sources with empirical geographic data. His maps set a new standard of accuracy and became indispensable to historians, geographers, and archaeologists. This English edition underscores the transnational influence of d’Anville’s cartographic legacy.
