Bilder Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) – Map of Græcia Antiqua, Specimen Geographicum – Large Engraved Map (1801)

Beskrivning
This engraved map titled "Græcia Antiqua, Specimen Geographicum" depicts the ancient geography of Greece, including key classical regions such as Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, Aetolia, Attica, the Peloponnese, and the surrounding islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas. An inset map in the top left shows part of Illyricum and northern Greece in more detail. The place names reflect ancient sources, consistent with d’Anville’s rigorous historical approach. The map was drawn and engraved based on d’Anville’s atlas and published in London by J. Harrison, No. 115 Newgate Street, on October 5, 1801.
D’Anville was one of the most respected cartographers of the Enlightenment era, known for combining classical sources with empirical geographic data. His maps set a new standard of accuracy and became indispensable to historians, geographers, and archaeologists. This English edition underscores the transnational influence of d’Anville’s cartographic legacy.
