Bilder Robert Bénard (1734–1777) – Fly-whisks from Otaheite (Tahiti) with Their Carved Handles – Copper Engraving (Late 18th Century)

Beskrivning
This detailed copper engraving, titled Emouchoir des Otahitiens avec ses manches (Fly-whisks of the Tahitians with their handles), depicts three ceremonial fly-whisks from Tahiti. Each object features ornate carved handles topped with anthropomorphic figures and long flowing fibers, accompanied by small decorative attachments. Marked as Tome II, Pl. 13, the engraving was created under the direction of Robert Bénard, one of the leading engravers of 18th-century French scientific voyages. The plate likely originates from the official account of the La Pérouse expedition or a related Pacific exploration work, intended to document material cultures encountered by European navigators. The composition reflects Enlightenment-era ethnographic interest in the craftsmanship and ritual objects of the South Pacific.
Robert Bénard (1734–1777) was a French engraver renowned for his work on major Enlightenment publications, including the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d’Alembert and illustrated voyage reports. He directed the production of hundreds of scientifically precise plates, playing a key role in visually disseminating knowledge gathered during exploratory and scientific missions of 18th-century France.
