Bilder Michiel Colijn (1584–1661) – Agger qui jungit Flandros fortesque Brabantos – Etching of Antwerp and the Scheldt Barrier (1613–1615)

Beskrivning
This finely detailed etching, published by Michiel Colijn between 1613 and 1615 in Amsterdam, presents a dramatic view of Antwerp and the strategic barrier constructed across the Scheldt River. Titled in Latin "Agger qui jungit Flandros fortésque Brabantos," the scene captures the critical military structure that linked Flanders and Brabant, depicted amidst a flurry of naval activity, artillery fire, and siege operations. At the forefront, commanders and soldiers observe the unfolding events, while ships engage in skirmishes along the fortified riverbanks. The Latin caption below reflects on the tumultuous and unpredictable nature of war.
This etching was later included in Polemographia Auraico-Belgica by Willem Baudartius, published by Colijn in 1621–1622. As a publisher, Michiel Colijn (1584–1661) played a central role in disseminating high-quality engravings that documented contemporary military and political history in the Dutch Republic.
