Beskrivning
This original 17th-century mezzotint engraving by Jonas Gole depicts Dr. Bernardus Somer (1621–1684), a Dutch theologian and clergyman, portrayed in formal ecclesiastical dress with a white collar and skullcap. The sitter is shown in three-quarter view with softly modelled facial features, rendered through delicate tonal transitions characteristic of mezzotint technique. Below the portrait is the inscription D. Bernardus Somer, along with a Latin dedication and the artist’s engraved signature J. Gole fecit. The work exemplifies the Dutch Golden Age tradition of portrait engraving, intended to honor scholars and religious figures of public standing.
