This original mezzotint engraving by Jonas Gole depicts Dr. Ioannes Smit, a Dutch theologian active in the late 17th century. The sitter is portrayed in formal clerical attire, wearing a wide white collar and dark robe, posed in a three-quarter bust view within an oval frame. The detailed facial modelling and rich tonal variation reflect the hallmarks of Gole’s mezzotint technique, which was praised for its ability to emulate the depth and softness of painted portraiture. The inscription D. Ioannes Smit appears beneath the image, alongside Gole’s signature J. Gole fecit, confirming the authorship.
Jonas Gole (c.1630–1679) was a Dutch engraver and printmaker active in Amsterdam and Haarlem. He specialized in portraiture, producing finely executed mezzotints after painted likenesses of notable individuals. His works are valued for their balance between painterly softness and graphic clarity, placing him among the skilled portrait engravers of the Dutch Republic.
