Bilder Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Terrestrial Crocodile / De Crocodilo Terrestri – Woodcut from Cosmographia Universalis (16th century)

Beskrivning
This antique hand-coloured woodcut of a so-called terrestrial crocodile (Crocodilo Terrestri, Aegyptiaco vel Arabico) comes from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia, one of the most influential and widely circulated encyclopedias of the 16th century. The image reflects early modern European fascination with exotic animals, often depicted through a blend of observation and mythology. The page features a Latin description of both the Nile and terrestrial crocodile, combining Renaissance natural science with early zoological typologies. The woodcut is attributed to David Kandel, Münster’s principal engraver, whose initials frequently appear on these zoological leaves.
Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew based in Basel. His Cosmographia, first published in 1544, was reissued in at least 35 editions and became the first detailed description of the world in German. Its success rested on its synthesis of classical sources, modern discoveries, and rich illustrations, which helped shape early geographic and scientific understanding.
