This striking hand-coloured engraving titled Le Milan (Kite) comes from Histoire Naturelle, the influential Enlightenment-era encyclopedia by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The composition shows a proud kite perched atop a rocky outcrop, wings relaxed, under a dramatic sky with distant mountains and architectural details. The original drawing was created by Jacques Eustache de Sève, court illustrator and master of zoological composition, and engraved by C. Baron. The visual precision of the bird’s plumage and the theatrical setting reflect Buffon’s vision of uniting empirical observation with artistic beauty. This engraving was part of the large natural history publishing project initiated in Paris in the 1760s. 

Jacques Eustache de Sève (1742–1788) was a leading illustrator of natural history and anatomical works in 18th-century France, and C. Baron was among the engravers selected to translate his drawings into copperplate. The work was published in Paris in 1766.
