Beskrivning

This beautifully rendered woodcut, attributed to Jost Amman, is part of the Kunstbüchlin, a famous Renaissance collection of woodcuts published by Johann Feyerabend in 1599 in Frankfurt am Main. This work, originally released in 1578 with subsequent editions, is an elaborate compilation of Amman's intricate woodcuts, depicting a wide range of subjects from various social classes, mythological figures, allegorical scenes, and representations of crafts and professions.
The current engraving, Allegorical Portrait of a Woman with Child, reflects Amman's mastery in portraying expressive figures and delicate ornamentation. The woman is depicted with detailed attire, jewelry, and floral elements, while she gently cradles a child. The composition emphasizes Renaissance ideals of femininity, motherhood, and symbolic grace, capturing the spirit of 16th-century allegorical art.

This engraving is part of Kunstbüchlin, an influential collection by Jost Amman that featured 245 full-page woodcuts (originally intended for 293). The Kunstbüchlin was a reference guide for artists, illustrating various social classes, mythological narratives, and allegorical figures. Published by Johann Feyerabend, it became a significant resource for studying costume design, medieval customs, and Renaissance iconography.

Jost Amman (1539–1591) was a Swiss-German engraver, woodcut artist, and illustrator known for his detailed representations of everyday life, mythology, and allegorical themes. Born in Zurich and active in Nuremberg, Amman became one of the most prolific printmakers of his era, contributing illustrations to emblem books, trade manuals, and historical publications. His precise line work and storytelling ability set a standard in Renaissance engraving and influenced many artists of his time.
