This elegantly detailed copperplate engraving, titled Empire d'Allemagne, was created by the renowned French cartographer Robert de Vaugondy and later corrected by Delamarche. The map provides a comprehensive view of the Holy Roman Empire as it stood during the mid-18th century, encompassing the various German principalities, duchies, and electorates that composed the fragmented political landscape of the time. Vivid hand-coloring outlines the borders of major territories, allowing for clear differentiation between political regions.
Vaugondy was one of the leading cartographers of his time, known for his collaboration with his father, Didier Robert de Vaugondy, in producing one of the most comprehensive atlases of the 18th century, Atlas Universel (1757). His work is renowned for its accuracy and artistic quality, blending scientific precision with artistic elegance. This particular map, enhanced by Delamarche, was part of an updated edition that sought to correct and expand geographical understanding, making it a valuable artifact for historical and biblical scholars.
