It depicts the red-footed falcon, a slender and graceful bird of prey native to Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Magnus von Wright (1805–1868) was the first taxidermist working with the vertebrate collections of Helsinki University. Beginning his career in the 1820s, he prepared specimens for the Societas pro Flora et Fauna Fennica and later served as taxidermist at the university's zoological museum. He also undertook study trips to Stockholm and St. Petersburg, authored a manual on mounting birds, and published the first Finnish bird handbook in 1859. His legacy, like that of his brothers Wilhelm and Ferdinand, lies in the exceptional quality of his zoological illustrations.
