Bilder Johann Georg Penz (1685–1749) after Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (1672–1733) – Reptilia Maris – Copperplate Engraving from Physica Sacra (c.1731–1735)

Beskrivning
This elaborate copperplate engraving titled Reptilia Maris depicts a detailed array of marine mollusks and seashells, framed within a grand architectural cartouche adorned with baroque ornamentation and instruments of natural philosophy. Numbered specimens include limpets, clams, and sea snails, all arranged within a stylized seascape. Below the image, a biblical reference to Psalm 104:25–26 emphasizes the divine creation of marine life, in keeping with the theological-naturalistic mission of the publication.
The engraving was created by Johann Georg Penz, one of the principal artists of the monumental Physica Sacra (also known as the Bible of Nature), a fusion of scripture and empirical science compiled by Swiss physician and polymath Johann Jakob Scheuchzer. Penz’s engraving exemplifies the fusion of scientific illustration and devotional imagery characteristic of the Enlightenment. The work was published in Augsburg between 1731 and 1735.
