The composition is crisp and symmetrical, emphasizing the animal’s unique striped coat, anatomical proportion, and exotic origin. The engraving is labeled “Tome XII” and “Pl. I. Pag. 306” and originally appeared in Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, a monumental Enlightenment project documenting the known animal kingdom.
