Bilder Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi (1627–1691) – Thermæ Septimii Severi in Transtiberina Regione – Copperplate Engraving from Splendore dell’Antica Roma (circa 1625)

Beskrivning
This copperplate engraving presents a reconstructed view of the Thermæ Septimii Severi — the Baths of Septimius Severus — located in the Transtiberina region (modern-day Trastevere) of Rome. The design features a massive complex rendered in precise perspective: central halls flanked by rotundas, columned porticoes, towers, and elevated galleries within a walled enclosure. A Latin caption below details the structure’s architectural significance and imperial context. The image is part of Splendore dell’Antica Roma, a series dedicated to the imagined grandeur of ancient Roman monuments.
The baths are attributed to the reign of Septimius Severus (193–211 AD), and historical sources suggest the possible existence of two such complexes attributed to the emperor. Though the physical remains are uncertain, this engraving reflects the 17th-century antiquarian desire to reconstruct imperial Rome’s topography with artistic vision and scholarly reference.
Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi (1627–1691) was a prominent Roman publisher and print dealer whose workshop disseminated some of the most iconic views of ancient and Baroque Rome. His editions, including works by Falda and Lauro, became foundational references for antiquarians, architects, and collectors across Europe
