Beskrivning

A Plan of Juan Fernandes Island in the South Sea, lying in the Latitude of 33d 40m South, and West from the Continent of Chili 110 Leagues / Variation of the Compass 10d 00m E. This engraved map was published in George Anson’s official account of his circumnavigation, A Voyage Round the World, first issued in 1748. It depicts the island of Juan Fernández off the coast of Chile, renowned as the refuge of Alexander Selkirk, whose solitary survival there inspired Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. The map includes such geographic features as Goat Island, Monkey Key, Cumberland Bay, and Sugar-loaf Bay, with fine topographical shading and coastal soundings. Created as part of British naval documentation, this chart reflects both strategic interest and literary legacy tied to this remote island.

George Anson (1697–1762) was a British admiral and explorer known for his expedition around the world (1740–1744), which significantly impacted British naval supremacy and maritime cartography. His circumnavigation, particularly the capture of a Spanish galleon, brought him national fame. The official account of his voyage, compiled by Richard Walter, included detailed charts and engravings like this map. Anson's contributions extended beyond exploration, influencing naval reform and 18th-century British geopolitical expansion.
