Beskrivning

This large-format engraving by Dominique Vivant Denon depicts the interior decoration of an Egyptian sarcophagus, covered in detailed hieroglyphics and symbolic imagery. The composition features two horizontal bands filled with meticulously rendered divine figures, animal symbols, ritual scenes, and funerary texts. At each end, stylized human forms, likely depictions of the goddess Nut, frame the register, representing protection and cosmic order in the afterlife. The engraving was published in Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, Denon’s seminal archaeological record of the French expedition to Egypt.

Dominique Vivant Denon (1747–1825) was a French artist, archaeologist, and diplomat, and the first director of the Louvre Museum. He accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte on his 1798–1801 Egyptian campaign and played a pivotal role in documenting ancient monuments along the Nile. His engravings became the first systematic visual documentation of Egyptian antiquities accessible to a European audience, sparking a profound fascination with Egyptology in the 19th century.
