Beskrivning

This dramatic chromolithograph by Charles Blunt represents the constellation Cepheus, portrayed as a crowned king seated on a throne, holding a scepter. The stars of the constellation are plotted with golden dots over the stylized figure, blending classical mythology with accurate stellar mapping. The figure of Cepheus, a character from Greek mythology and husband of Cassiopeia, is shown with regal poise, silhouetted in gray against the deep black of the night sky. This plate, marked “No. 35,” was part of a visually rich astronomical series produced to educate and inspire curiosity about the heavens.

Charles Blunt was a British science educator active in the early 19th century. His series of astronomical chromolithographs, published around 1840 in London, made celestial knowledge accessible to students and the general public. These illustrations were both scientifically informative and artistically compelling, forming a bridge between myth and empirical observation.
