Beskrivning

This detailed copperplate engraving presents a military map of the town and harbour of Mahon, including St. Philip’s Castle and its elaborate system of fortifications, located on the island of Menorca in the Balearic Islands. Engraved by Isaac Basire, the map was published in London in 1752 by John and Paul Knapton as part of Mr. Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England. The composition includes a decorative cartouche listing 32 points of interest within the fortress and surrounding region, as well as British and Spanish ships anchored in the harbour. The layout reflects the strategic importance of Mahon as a naval base during the 18th century, particularly during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War.

Isaac Basire (1704–1768) was a British engraver renowned for his maps and historical prints. He worked extensively for publishers producing historical and antiquarian works, and his engravings are noted for their precision and clarity, contributing significantly to British cartography and visual historiography in the Georgian era.
