Bilder Jacques de Sève (active 1742–1788) – Le Daim (The Fallow Deer) – Copperplate Engraving by Charles Baquoy from Histoire Naturelle by Buffon (Late 18th Century)

Beskrivning
This finely executed copperplate engraving titled Le Daim (The Fallow Deer) is part of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s encyclopedic Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière. The animal is depicted in a poised and elegant stance, its antlers branching symmetrically and its distinctive spotted coat rendered with exquisite detail. The naturalistic background, complete with foliage and fallen logs, provides a graceful context for the animal's form. This plate is labeled Tome VII, Pl. XXVII and was drawn by Jacques de Sève and engraved by Charles Baquoy, both of whom were central figures in the illustration program of Buffon's seminal natural history series.
Buffon’s work played a major role in shaping 18th-century zoology, offering both scientific classification and philosophical reflection on the diversity of life.
