This hand-colored engraving shows the fortified town and rocky promontory of Gibraltar with sailing vessels in the foreground. It was published in Paris on Rue St. Jacques as part of a popular optical view series.
Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) was an Italian architect, engraver, and antiquarian celebrated for his dramatic views of Roman architecture and classical ruins. He elevated the genre of architectural vedute through technical mastery and visionary perspective, influencing generations of European artists and architects.
