Beskrivning

This engraved plate comes from the fifth volume of Cyclopaedia, or an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, a landmark British encyclopedic work originally compiled by Ephraim Chambers and later expanded by Abraham Rees. The illustration documents various types of sailing ships—including brig, schooner, galiot, sloop, snow, xebec, and galley—alongside technical diagrams showing rigging, hull cross-sections, and elevation plans. It reflects the Enlightenment’s commitment to empirical classification and maritime science at the close of the 18th century.

Ephraim Chambers (c.1680–1740) was a pioneering British encyclopedist, whose Cyclopaedia set a precedent for organized knowledge in the English-speaking world. The work was reissued and vastly expanded by Abraham Rees (1743–1825), a Welsh clergyman and scholar, who supervised the multi-volume edition that included engraved scientific plates across numerous disciplines.
