Bilder Magnus von Wright (1805–1868) – European Eagle-Owl (Bubo Bubo) – Chromolithograph (1920)

Beskrivning
This exquisite chromolithograph of the European Eagle-Owl (Bubo Bubo) was created after the works of Magnus von Wright, a pioneering Finnish zoological illustrator and the first taxidermist for the vertebrate collections at Helsinki University. His dedication to ornithology and meticulous study of Finnish avifauna established him as a prominent figure in both scientific and artistic circles. The lifelike depiction of the owl showcases Wright's ability to capture intricate feather patterns and the piercing gaze characteristic of the species. First published in 1920, this work exemplifies the chromolithographic technique's capability to reproduce vibrant color and fine detail, preserving the essence of von Wright's original artistry. His contributions to Finnish ornithology, including the first handbook on Finnish birds published in 1859, have solidified his legacy as a master of zoological illustration.
Magnus von Wright (1805–1868) was the first taxidermist working with the vertebrate collections of Helsinki University. Starting out as a taxidermist in the 1820s, he stuffed birds for Societas pro Flora et Fauna Fennica, the oldest scientific society in Finland, and in 1845, became the taxidermist at the university's zoological museum. Von Wright made several study journeys to Stockholm and St. Petersburg, and even wrote a short manual on how to mount birds. Though a skilful taxidermist, his reputation, like that of his two brothers, Wilhelm and Ferdinand, rests on his skill as a zoological illustrator. In 1859 he published the first handbook on Finnish birds.
