Bilder Jean-Baptiste Massé (1687–1767) after Peter Paul Rubens - Large Engraving - César n’admire qu’un astre unique – 1708

Beskrivning
Monumental allegorical engraving by Jean-Baptiste Massé after a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, titled César n’admire qu’un astre unique (Caesar admires but one star). The work depicts a mythological and symbolic scene in which Julius Caesar, surrounded by warriors and deities, is shown gazing at the portrait of a female figure held by a cherub, representing the singular object of his admiration. The composition is rich in classical symbolism—featuring gods, armor, clouds, and flowing drapery—and reflects the grandeur of Rubens’ baroque vision, reinterpreted with Massé’s refined engraving technique.
Jean-Baptiste Massé (1687–1767) was a French painter and engraver known for his detailed allegorical and historical compositions. He trained under Louis de Boullogne and was appointed Premier peintre du Roi. His engravings were frequently based on works by Rubens and other Flemish masters, commissioned for royal collections or published with privileges under the Ancien Régime. His technical skill and compositional clarity placed him among the key French engravers of the 18th century.
