Bilder Willem Baudartius (1565–1640) – Battle Scene from the Campaigns of Prince Maurits – Engraving from Les guerres de Nassau (1616)
Beskrivning
This original engraving illustrates a tactical battlefield scene from the military campaigns of Prince Maurits of Nassau during the Eighty Years' War. Depicted from an elevated perspective, the image shows formations of soldiers in wooded terrain, likely during a maneuver or engagement under the reign of Philip III and the command of Archduke Albert. The engraving is part of the 1616 Amsterdam edition of Les guerres de Nassau, a key visual chronicle of the first decades of the Dutch Revolt, based on earlier battle prints by Frans Hogenberg and Orlers, supplemented by new compositions.
Willem Baudartius (1565–1640) was a Flemish-born theologian, writer, and translator. Forced into exile during the religious conflicts of the 16th century, he eventually settled in the Northern Netherlands and became a prominent figure in the Dutch Reformed Church. He contributed to the Statenvertaling (official Dutch Bible translation) and was a key chronicler of the Dutch struggle for independence. The engravings in his work were created by several artists, including Simon Wynhoutsz. Frisius (1580–1629), a renowned Dutch engraver of historical and military scenes.
