This original engraving depicts the siege of Rheinberg (Rheinberck), a strategically significant town on the Rhine, during the campaigns of Prince Maurits of Nassau in the Eighty Years’ War. Shown are the surrounding encampments, river crossings, and troop formations engaging in the siege, as well as the fortified city layout. The plate is part of Les guerres de Nassau, published in Amsterdam in 1616, which documents the military operations of the House of Nassau and the Dutch Republic from a Contra-Remonstrant perspective.

Willem Baudartius (1565–1640) was a Flemish-born theologian, writer, and translator. Forced into exile during the religious conflicts of the 16th century, he eventually settled in the Northern Netherlands and became a prominent figure in the Dutch Reformed Church. He contributed to the Statenvertaling (official Dutch Bible translation) and was a key chronicler of the Dutch struggle for independence. The engravings in his work were created by several artists, including Simon Wynhoutsz. Frisius (1580–1629), a renowned Dutch engraver of historical and military scenes.
