Bilder Sébastien de Pontault de Beaulieu (c.1612–1674) – Fort de Watten, Flanders – Engraving from Les Plans et Profils des principales Villes du Comté de Flandre (1667)

Beskrivning
This original 17th-century engraving depicts the fortified town and hilltop citadel of Watten (Waten) in French Flanders. The panoramic view shows the fortifications rising above the landscape, complete with windmills, spires, and military structures, framed by decorative trees and a flowing title banner. The engraving was part of Les Plans et Profils des principales Villes et Lieux considérables du Comté de Flandre, a monumental military topographic work issued under the reign of Louis XIV. It documented the fortresses, sieges, and strategic sites captured or controlled by the French during the War of Devolution and other campaigns.
Sébastien de Pontault de Beaulieu (c.1612–1674) was the royal engineer and military cartographer to King Louis XIV. Known as the founder of French military topographic engraving, he created hundreds of detailed plans and views of fortified cities, camps, and battles, many of which were published under royal patronage. His works were both artistic and strategic, glorifying the Sun King's military achievements through precision and grandeur.
