Bilder Romeyn de Hooghe (1645–1708) – Allegorical Plate from Het Derde Deel of Jacob Cats – Copperplate Engraving (Late 17th Century)

Beskrivning
This intricate allegorical engraving served as a chapter frontispiece in the third part of a major emblematic or didactic work by Jacob Cats, such as Houwelick or Alle de Wercken. The scene is centered on a celestial medal lowered by cherubs bearing the ribbon motto “Proeft dit goudt in echte trouw” ("Test this gold in true faithfulness"). Below, elegantly dressed couples engage in courtship while figures on the right react with admiration and envy. The message blends the virtues of marriage, sincerity, and divine harmony.
Attributed to Romeyn de Hooghe, the engraving features his typical dramatic flair, theatrical composition, and sharp character portrayal, with layered symbolism and baroque excess. Such plates accompanied Cats’ moral poems and were designed to both entertain and edify the viewer.
Romeyn de Hooghe (1645–1708) was one of the most prolific Dutch engravers of the late 17th century, renowned for his emblematic, satirical, and historical scenes. His collaborations with Dutch literary figures, including Jacob Cats, resulted in some of the most memorable visual allegories of the Golden Age.
