Bilder Willem Goeree (1635–1711) & Jan Luyken (1649–1712) – Map of Egypt with Idolatrous Gods and Ritual Animals – Engraving (Late 17th Century)

Beskrivning
This visually rich engraving presents a symbolic map of Egypt overlaid with classical and biblical iconography. The upper portion features a detailed cartographic rendering of Egypt and Libya, complete with rivers, cities, and ancient place names. Framed medallions depict Alexandria, sacred animals, and mythological emblems. The lower section is dominated by allegorical figures—musicians, scribes, and deities—alongside a large humanoid bull figure and a tableau of ritual idols and zoomorphic gods. A dramatic crocodile and various objects associated with Egyptian worship complete the composition.
Created by Willem Goeree and engraved by Jan Luyken, the print is both a geographical and theological statement, blending mapmaking with religious polemic. It reflects the Dutch Golden Age fascination with ancient civilizations, particularly Egypt, which was often portrayed as a cautionary symbol of idolatry in Christian scholarship.
