Beskrivning
This dramatic etching by Stefano della Bella depicts the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome amidst cannon smoke, flying a massive flag while engaged in what appears to be a ceremonial or defensive artillery discharge. Viewed from the left bank of the Tiber, the scene encompasses the Sant’Angelo Bridge and lively groups of onlookers, soldiers, and boats along the river. The image blends topographical accuracy with dynamic visual narrative, showcasing della Bella’s skill in capturing both architectural grandeur and human drama.
