Bilder Cornelis Schut I (1597–1655), Cornelis Galle I (1576–1650), & Cornelis Galle II (1615–1678) – Allegory of Peace – Engraving (1618–1655)
Beskrivning
This elaborate allegorical engraving depicts Peace enthroned at the center of a dynamic Baroque composition, surrounded by putti, nymphs, and emblems of abundance. She holds an olive branch while a winged figure above crowns her with a laurel wreath. To her side, Mars is subdued and disarmed, symbolizing the triumph of harmony over conflict. Symbols of prosperity—including fruits, a cornucopia, and flowing water—abound, reinforcing the message of fertile flourishing under peaceful rule. Cherubs hover across the composition, and defeated figures below personify war, chaos, and suffering.
The design is attributed to Cornelis Schut I, a Flemish Baroque painter known for his allegorical and religious scenes infused with theatrical intensity. The engraving was executed by Cornelis Galle I or II—both prominent Antwerp printmakers associated with Rubens and the dissemination of Flemish allegorical imagery throughout Europe.
