Bilder Samuel von Pufendorf (1632–1694) – Le Globe Céleste – Hand-Coloured Engraving (Late 17th Century)

Beskrivning
This elegant celestial chart titled Le Globe Céleste presents twin hemispheres of the night sky, showing 1,022 stars grouped into 48 constellations—12 within the zodiac and 36 outside it. The northern (la Partie Septentrionale) and southern (la Partie Meridionale) celestial hemispheres are rendered in fine detail, with mythological figures representing classical constellations such as Ursa Major, Orion, Pegasus, and Hydra. The surrounding banner and ornate framework suggest this was a frontispiece or instructional plate, possibly from a scientific or philosophical work.
Attributed to the renowned jurist and philosopher Samuel von Pufendorf, the chart likely reflects the Enlightenment’s efforts to harmonize empirical science and moral philosophy. Though Pufendorf himself was not an astronomer, works published under his name often included scientific illustrations, especially in educational compendiums that blended natural law, theology, and cosmography.
