This finely engraved and hand-coloured map titled La Grande Bretagne, et Irlande was produced by Nicolas Sanson or under the direction of his sons and successors, known collectively as les Fils Sanson. The map depicts the British Isles in careful detail, featuring historic regions of England, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as parts of northern France. Notable are the French spellings of provinces such as Ecosse, Angleterre, Irlande, Ultonie, and Cornouailles, reflecting the map’s French publication context.

Sanson is celebrated as the father of French cartography, whose scientific approach to geography helped shift the center of European mapmaking from the Netherlands to France in the 17th century. This map, marked Tome IV. Pag. 1, likely comes from a later edition of one of Sanson’s composite atlases published posthumously in Paris, possibly by his sons Guillaume or Adrien Sanson, or by successor publishers such as Pierre Mariette.
