Bilder Dominique Vivant Denon (1747–1825) – Temple of Apollinopolis Magna in Edfu – Engraving from Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte (1809)

Beskrivning
This original antique engraving depicts the Temple of Apollinopolis Magna, now known as the Temple of Edfu, one of the most complete and grandiose temples of the Ptolemaic era in Egypt. The composition features the temple's colossal pylons, monumental entrance, and massive columned hypostyle hall, all meticulously recorded with a blend of artistic expression and archaeological precision. The scene evokes both the scale and solemnity of ancient Egyptian religious architecture as it was encountered by European eyes during Napoleon's campaign.
Published in 1809 by Samuel Bagster in London, the engraving comes from Dominique Vivant Denon’s influential Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, which documented Egypt’s monuments during the French expedition of 1798–1801. As Napoleon’s official artist and chronicler, Denon created the first detailed visual record of many ancient sites, helping to spark the birth of modern Egyptology.
