Beskrivning
The map titled Patrimonio di S. Pietro olim Tuscia Suburbicaria presents a detailed geographic and symbolic rendering of the core region of the Papal States, with particular focus on the area surrounding Rome. Created by Giacomo Filippo Ameti and published by Domenico de Rossi in 1696, the engraving charts ancient Roman roads, estates (casali), fortified sites, and ecclesiastical holdings with exceptional clarity. The elaborate cartouche at the lower edge features allegorical figures and papal insignia, emphasizing the map’s function as both an administrative tool and a declaration of spiritual authority. Its accuracy and artistry made it one of the key cartographic documents of late Baroque Rome.
Giacomo Filippo Ameti was an Italian cartographer renowned for his contributions to Baroque-era mapping, particularly of Rome and its papal dominions.
