This original copperplate engraving titled Silesiae Ducatus in XVII suos Principatus et Dominia presents an elaborate map of the historical Duchy of Silesia, divided into its seventeen principalities and dominions. Each region is outlined in vivid original hand-colouring. The map showcases cities, rivers, forests, and mountain ranges with high cartographic precision.
In the lower left, an allegorical cartouche depicts figures of nobility, education, and military strength, alongside heraldic symbols and classical architecture. The title cartouche, inscribed onto a stone with pastoral surroundings and a baroque flourish, is located in the upper right corner.
This map was published by Christoph Weigel the Elder in Nuremberg around 1720. Weigel was a celebrated German engraver and mapmaker known for his precise and ornamentally rich atlases. His work stands among the finest examples of German cartography in the early 18th century, combining geographic detail with emblematic artistry.
