Original German title: Durchschnitt eines Capital Krieg-Schiffs.... This map presents a detailed cutaway view of a large warship with meticulously labeled sections, decks, and equipment used aboard naval vessels in the early 18th century. Surrounding the ship are diagrams of nautical instruments, such as various types of compasses, proportional circles, and star charts, as well as small boats (Boot, Chalouppe) and lifting devices for ship maintenance (Schiffheber, or camel systems). The engraving serves as a technical and educational visualization of maritime engineering and navigation practices of the period.
Christoph Weigel was a prominent German engraver, publisher, and cartographer based in Nuremberg. He produced numerous works of geographical and historical importance, often characterized by their precise engraving and elegant baroque ornamentation. Weigel collaborated with scholars and artists of his time to produce educational atlases and illustrated books. His maps and diagrams are now prized for their artistic value and technical insight.
