The plate was published in the monumental Ichthyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle Générale et Particulière des Poissons, which appeared in Berlin, Paris, and London between 1785 and 1788. The work remains a landmark in zoological illustration and Enlightenment natural history.
Marcus Elieser Bloch was a German physician and naturalist, considered one of the most important ichthyologists of the 18th century. He devoted much of his life to cataloging fish species, combining scientific descriptions with visually captivating engravings. His Ichthyologie series documented over 200 new species and remains a cornerstone in the study of marine biology and zoological art.
