This finely executed engraving features two panels filled with a variety of tropical fish species found along the coasts of the Dutch East Indies. The upper scene depicts patterned and spined fish laid out against a shoreline bustling with activity—sailboats, workers, and a distant horizon. The lower panel presents another diverse group of marine specimens, including fish with bold markings, elongated fins, and exaggerated anatomical features, set before a backdrop of coastal tents and fishing operations. The composition blends scientific curiosity with colonial visual narrative and was published in Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën by François Valentijn.

François Valentijn was a Dutch theologian, historian, and naturalist who lived for many years in the East Indies. His five-volume work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724–1726) is one of the most comprehensive sources on the geography, flora, fauna, and cultures of Southeast Asia during the early 18th century. The engravings included in the work are highly valued for their early representations of native wildlife and colonial landscapes.
