Bilder François Valentijn (1666–1727) – Coastal and Coral Reef Fish from the East Indies – Engraving (1724–1726)
Beskrivning
This antique engraving presents two vivid panels featuring tropical fish species native to the waters of the East Indies. The upper register shows a group of intricately patterned and armored fish, including species with spotted flanks and jagged dorsal fins, arranged on a shoreline with reeds and distant coastal mountains. The lower panel depicts rounded reef fish, including puffers and triggerfish, as well as a large specimen with a bold lateral eye marking, all placed against a tropical seascape with palms and cloudbanks. Each fish is rendered in a highly expressive and scientific style, typical of illustrations from Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën by François Valentijn.
François Valentijn was a Dutch theologian, historian, and naturalist who lived for many years in the East Indies. His five-volume work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724–1726) is one of the most comprehensive sources on the geography, flora, fauna, and cultures of Southeast Asia during the early 18th century. The engravings included in the work are highly valued for their early representations of native wildlife and colonial landscapes.
