Bilder Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Nasturtium with Cabbage White Butterflies – From Phytanthoza Iconographia – Botanical & Entomological Engraving (c.1737)

Beskrivning
This delicate copperplate engraving depicts a flowering nasturtium plant entangled with two Cabbage White butterflies (Pieris rapae) and other small insects in natural motion. The graceful curvature of the stems and realistic shading of the leaves create a sense of botanical dynamism, while the insects are captured in mid-flight or repose, showing the interplay between flora and fauna. This plate (marked XVI) originates from Phytanthoza Iconographia, the monumental botanical compendium published by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, combining scientific study with Baroque aesthetics in natural history.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose Phytanthoza Iconographia (1737–1745) remains one of the most significant botanical works of the 18th century. It featured over a thousand hand-coloured engravings based on mezzotint technique and combined meticulous detail with decorative beauty. The plates were produced by a team of skilled illustrators and engravers, including Georg Dionysius Ehret, and were pioneering in their artistic and scientific ambition.
