Bilder Jacobus Harrewijn (1660–1727) after Jacques van Croes – View of the Garden of the Rubenshuis, Antwerp / Maison d’Hiver de Rubens – Engraving (1684)

Beskrivning
This finely executed architectural engraving offers a perspective view of the courtyard and formal garden of the Rubenshuis (Rubens House) in Antwerp, identified here as Maison d’Hiver de Rubens or l’Hostel Rubens. The scene features a grand entrance arch with sculptural ornamentation and a long axial path leading toward a garden pavilion, framed by symmetrical façades with classical windows, niches, and statues. The engraving reflects the baroque elegance of Rubens’ residence, designed in part by the artist himself as a model of Italianate grandeur transplanted to the Low Countries. The work is signed by Jacobus Harrewijn as engraver and Jacques van Croes as the original artist.
Jacobus Harrewijn was a Dutch engraver active in the Southern Netherlands, known for his architectural and topographical prints. His engravings often captured civic buildings, estates, and monuments with great precision and depth. Jacques van Croes, a Flemish painter and draftsman, specialized in landscape and architectural views, contributing to the documentation of 17th-century Flemish heritage. Together, their work offers a rare visual record of one of Europe’s most culturally significant artist residences.
