Beskrivning

This richly detailed map titled L’Allemagne presents the political geography of the Holy Roman Empire, with clear demarcation of principalities, bishoprics, kingdoms, and free cities across Central Europe. Originally compiled by Guillaume Delisle, the map is based on the most advanced astronomical and geographical observations of the French Académie Royale des Sciences. This later edition was published by Jean-Claude Dezauche, who acquired the rights to Delisle’s and Buache’s plates in 1780. The map includes elaborate cartouches, reference panels, and finely engraved borders with hand-applied outline colouring, representing the highest standards of Enlightenment-era cartography.

Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726) was one of the most influential French cartographers of the early 18th century. A member of the Académie Royale des Sciences, he revolutionized mapmaking through his use of astronomical measurements and scientific principles. His atlases and single-sheet maps were considered the most accurate of their time and were widely disseminated across Europe.

Jean-Claude Dezauche (1745–1824) was a Parisian map publisher and geographical engraver who became the principal editor of the Delisle-Buache cartographic legacy. In 1780, he purchased their stock of plates and reissued many of their works with updated details and new colourings, continuing their influence well into the 19th century.
