Beskrivning

This original copperplate engraving by Giacomo Lauro depicts the Amphitheatrum Vespasiani, commonly known as the Colosseum. The architectural cutaway reveals both the grand façade and the interior structure of the Roman amphitheater, including labeled sections such as the arena, underground chambers, audience seating, and external arcades. Detailed Latin annotations and a descriptive caption at the bottom provide a classical guide to one of the most iconic monuments of ancient Rome.

Giacomo Lauro was an Italian engraver and antiquarian best known for his monumental series Antiquae Urbis Splendor, published in Rome in the early 17th century. Through detailed reconstructions and idealized representations of ancient Roman architecture, Lauro contributed to the early modern revival of classical antiquity and the visual history of Rome.
