Bilder Theodor de Bry – Gonzalus Pizarrus vincitur, capitur & supplicio afficitur – Original Engraving from Americae Pars Sexta – Frankfurt, 1596

Beskrivning
This historical engraving by Theodor de Bry depicts the capture and execution of Gonzalo Pizarro, brother of Francisco Pizarro, during the Spanish conquest of the Americas. In the center, Spanish soldiers bind the defeated commander under a mountainous backdrop and amidst a colonial cityscape. Troop formations, lances, and distant crowds fill the scene with tense movement. The Latin caption and accompanying text detail the moment when Pizarro, once governor of Quito, was tried and executed for rebellion against the Spanish crown.
Theodor de Bry was a Flemish-born engraver and publisher based in Frankfurt, whose Grand Voyages chronicled European exploration in the Americas. His illustrated volumes combined meticulous engraving technique with dramatic narrative, shaping the European visual imagination of the New World. This particular plate comes from Americae Pars Sexta, the sixth part of his major series documenting conquests and colonial campaigns.
