Bilder Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522–1605) – Illustrations of Monstrous Beings – Woodcut (1607)

Beskrivning
A woodcut print from a page of an old text, featuring two separate illustrations of monstrous creatures. The upper image depicts a being with a human body and a dog-like or pig-like head, while the lower image shows a nude human figure with the face of a frog. Both illustrations are accompanied by descriptive text in old English, which provides accounts of these unusual births in Saxony and France. The print serves as a document of early modern beliefs about natural abnormalities and is characteristic of the encyclopedic works of the period.
Ulisse Aldrovandi was an Italian naturalist and polymath who made significant contributions to the study of natural history. A professor at the University of Bologna, he amassed one of the most extensive cabinets of curiosities of his time and authored a monumental series of encyclopedias documenting the animal, plant, and mineral kingdoms. His works, including his books on ornithology, were influential for centuries and are considered foundational texts in the history of science and natural illustration.
