This allegorical etching by Daniel Meisner shows a panoramic view of the Italian town of Nocera Umbra in Umbria, depicted in fine detail with its clustered rooftops and hilltop setting. The Latin and German verses below lament the devaluation of true art in favor of foolishness and pretense—typical of the satirical and moralizing tone in Meisner’s emblematic city views. The title at the top reads: “Ubo künstleyt, gilt ungeschicklichkeit” (“Where art is, clumsiness is honored”), reinforcing the central message.

This print is part of Meisner’s Thesaurus Philo-Politicus (Political and Philosophical Treasury), a vast emblem book that combined real topographical views with emblematic figures and philosophical mottos, printed in Frankfurt and Nuremberg during the early 17th century.
