Bilder Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Lake Geneva – Woodcut (Circa 1570)

Beskrivning
This sheet is an original map and text page, taken from a section titled "Von dem Teutschen Lande" (Concerning the German Lands) in German. The main feature is a woodcut map illustrating Lake Geneva (Lacus Lemanus or Genffer See), showing the lake's outline and surrounding topography, as well as several cities and towns along the shores, including Genf (Geneva) and Lausanna (Lausanne). The orientation is characteristic of early cartography. The accompanying German letterpress text discusses the lake's properties and the bordering territories, placing it within the geographical context of Switzerland or southern Germany as understood at the time. This topographical and map work originates from a posthumous edition of Sebastian Münster’s renowned Cosmographia, the pivotal 16th-century compendium of world geography and history.
Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, theologian, and cosmographer whose work provided a crucial geographical overview of the world in the Renaissance. His Cosmographia was one of the most successful books of the century, making complex geographical knowledge widely accessible.
