Beskrivning
This sheet is an original double-page map and text spread, titled "Warhafftige Abconterfactung der Herrlichen und Besten Statt Mäcker" (True Representation of the Glorious and Best City of Mâcon). The dominant feature is a highly detailed, panoramic bird's-eye city map of Mâcon, France, situated along a wide bend of the Saône River. The view captures the urban density, fortifications, and the cultivated and hilly landscape surrounding the city. Below the main image, German letterpress text discusses the city's historical significance and surrounding territories. This topographical and map work originates from a posthumous edition of Sebastian Münster’s renowned Cosmographia, the pivotal 16th-century compendium of world geography, which visually documented many important European cities.
Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, theologian, and cosmographer whose influential work, Cosmographia, systematically provided a geographical and historical overview of the world in the Renaissance.
