Bilder Theodore de Bry (1528–1598) – The West Indies: Conquest and Violence – Engraving (Circa 1595)

Beskrivning
This original text and engraving page is titled "Von West Indien" (Concerning the West Indies) and is a historical scene illustrating the violent period of European colonization in the Americas. The central image is divided into two parts: on the left, Spanish soldiers (conquistadors) are shown in a chaotic, armed confrontation with native inhabitants near the shore, with European ships visible in the background. On the right, three Europeans are shown seated at a table, feasting in the partial interior of a building, seemingly oblivious to the violence outside. This print is sourced from Theodore de Bry’s influential multi-volume series, Collectiones peregrinationum in Indiam occidentalem (The Great Voyages), which provided European readers with one of the first comprehensive visual accounts of the New World. The engraving is based on accounts of early explorers and often served a dual purpose of documentation and propaganda.
Theodore de Bry was a Flemish engraver, goldsmith, and publisher who, along with his sons, produced the highly important illustrated book series known as the Grands Voyages. Though he never traveled to the Americas, his detailed copperplate engravings were crucial in shaping European perceptions of the New World's geography, peoples, and the brutality of the colonization process.
